Nelson Bennett is a former professional rock drummer who gave up life on the road to become a journalist. In the meantime, he took up songwriting -- something he does strictly for creative expression.
Whenever he plays his original songs for friends or small audiences, he always gets the same thing: "You should record that!"
But recording costs a lot of money, to do it right, which is why he enters contests like this one. Any money he might win would go to recording a professional quality CD.
"Who knows -- if it started to sell, I just might quit my day job and go back on the road," says the Richmond, B.C. reporter.
Bennett's acoustic guitar-based music is a blend of country, folk and pop. His subjects range from John Prine-style humorous ditties, like Daisy Went Crazy (a song about cannibal cows), to contemplative songs about life, love and longing.
