With his latest CD release (2009's "The Great Awakening"), Canadian singer-songwriter, Anthony Burbidge, delivers ten original songs in a style that's been called "Empower-Pop World Fusion" - a blending of uplifting & inspiring lyrics set against a musical tapestry of sounds from around the globe.
The story of the artist's journey to the creation of this heart opening music is filled with twists and turns. In 1993, Burbidge released his first CD while still enrolled in the Bachelor of Classical Music Program at Mount Allison University and his ambitious pop/rock songs landed him on television, radio and in newspapers in his native Canada. Tragically, within a few short months of the CD's release, the young Burbidge was struck by a severe chronic illness that forced him to abandon his musical path - but not his dreams.
Over the course of the next decade, Burbidge stayed close to the music while working in and eventually managing a music store. While the job did become, as Burbidge describes it in his own words, "...the best education a musician could find," and the position allowed him to work with many people in the music business (from the local indie artist dropping off CDs for consignment to the execs at the major labels), Burbidge longed to return to making music of his own.
In 2005, after spending several years and thousands of dollars building a home music studio, Burbidge left his job managing his little indie music store and applied himself to the task of becoming a proficient studio engineer - a skill that would prove invaluable in later realizing his ultimate vision of creating "The Great Awakening".
By early 2007, Anthony Burbidge had released his first CD in 14 years, the acoustic and introspective, "Newborn" and he began touring throughout North America. Bolstered by the success of that release and feedback from his audiences, in 2008, Burbidge headed back in the studio for 10 long months to create his latest release.
The album that was born from those recording sessions is "The Great Awakening", is an album in the traditional sense - not a random hodgepodge of singles strung together for convenience sake. No, rather this is a program that guides the listener on a journey of both musical and self-discovery. Its songs are filled with messages of hope and global unity and the music is characterized by lush arrangements - strings, tabla, santoor, Irish pipes, Middle Eastern percussion, Armenian Duduk and even a choir.
When speaking of the album, Burbidge reflects on the journey that brought him to this point:
“When I first got sick in ‘93, I thought I'd get over it within a year. I was young, you know, I had youth on my side. But as the months became years and no doctor had a cure, I eventually succumbed to frustration and depression but, worst of all, I lost touch with the musician in me. I didn't sing a note for 7 long years; I didn't have the energy - Chronic Fatigue is one of the nasty symptoms of Environmental Illness you know. So, I eventually began to seek emotional and spiritual healing as well as physical. This challenging inner work eventually proved invaluable because, years later when I began writing again, I found the songs were no longer coming ‘from me’ but rather ‘through me’.
With this new CD, I've finally encapsulated not only the education my ears received from listening to more than 10,000 CDs while working in the record store, but also the experiences of my own personal journey over the past 15 years. The songs stand as both a testament to the power of persistence and also as a beacon of hope for all those taking action to make the world a better place."
There is a very nice flow to this song. It kinda transports the listener on a rhythmic magic carpetlike world journey. Well Done! Congratulations on your first place win with this song in the Rock Catagory of the 2009 Songwriters contest.

This is a brilliant song. I especially love the line about the Russians loving their children too; it's so true that when we buy into the popular belief of separation, we dehumanize people. Well done Anthony!
