Babe Gurr Bio
This roots singer-songwriter has been turning heads for years with her blend of roots/blues/folk. Her warm and sultry voice, intelligent lyrics, memorable melodies and savvy personality add up to pretty much everything you want to see on a stage. Recent winner of the Sonic Bids Nashville Song Contest, Babe’s latest release Chocolate Lilly has been garnering rave reviews in Canada and the US. Her music has been compared to the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt and Sheryl Crow, yet she still retains her own unique sound and style. Make sure to discover (or re-discover) this Vancouver musical diamond.
Born on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Babe spent many years on the move with her family living on various Air Force Bases throughout Canada and Germany. Her love of music began at a young age but it wasn’t until her mid-twenties that she joined her first band and discovered her true passion! Playing in a variety of bands ranging from pop/rock, jazz and R&B over the years in Canada and London, England, Babe honed her craft. After studying the jazz/commercial music program at a Vancouver college, she began writing her own music. One of the best-selling Indie recording artists around, Babe’s music has been described as honest, rootsy and real, fitting powerful stories to thoughtful music with craftswomanlike precision.
Keeping with the tradition of Babe’s previous discs, her latest collection of songs on her new CD Chocolate Lilly features a powerful yet sensitive singer, with material to match. Her current release has a fresh, yet familiar sound and will take the listener to many places. Babe’s warm but powerful voice is beautifully showcased with the stripped down sounds on this album, a blend of roots, folk and blues. All of the songs on the CD were penned by Babe Gurr with the exception of her roots-based version of the Ray Charles cover Unchain My Heart.
Babe has been the support act for various artists throughout the past years, including Amanda Marshall, Amy Sky, Colin Hay (from Men at Work), J. Gaines & The Soul Attorneys, Luka Bloom, Barney Bentall and Grapes of Wrath and has headlined at numerous festivals including Toronto’s Harbourfont Music Series, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Victoria Folkfest, First Night, Mission Folk Music Festival, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Music Festival, Filberg Festival and Islands Folk Festival. Her tunes have been licensed for various shows including the U.S. FOX series Higher Ground which has brought her music to audiences worldwide. Babe appeared on the television show Big Sound, playing an avant-garde lounge singer and has been a guest on many national shows such as Canada AM and The Jim Byrnes Show. Playing some of the most popular and prestigious concert halls in Canada spanning from Vancouver Island to the Maritimes and U.S. dates in New York and Seattle, Babe Gurr’s name is familiar to fans who appreciate finely crafted songs performed with sincerity.

Great swing and rhythm, wonderful vocals and punchy love gone wrong lyrics. this song is a real "earworm", very catchy.

Reminiscent of early 70s Stones songs like Tumblin Dice and the rockier side of Linda Rhonstadt, "Hard to Get Over Me" is an r and b gem. Dynamite sing-a-long chorus. The lyrics are refreshingly upbeat and even the coda has a memorable and distinctive hook. A sure winner!

Fun song. It takes me back to eras gone by where music meant something and not just a commercial wannabe. Great vibe of the seventies combined with modern sensibilities.

I love this song because Babe has a way of getting you to feel how she is feeling when writing this song. I love it's power, Yet done with such sweetness. Her voice is real earth, rare quality in todays world. I listen to it as my heart and being fully enjoying the moment. I love her simplicity, that, then it seem more powerful.

It's got a great up beat happy sound. It leaves you tapping your feet and feeling good. Although it is about heart break it is also about getting through it and getting stronger. It's a feel good song and should definitely win.

When I first heard Babe Gurr's new song it woke me up to an important aspect of myself. But what and how? We've all been there---that personal state of mind where we need to get over someone and move on. But Babe turns it around and makes us see it from a different perspective. And that's the mark of a good songwriter. She tells us that we're worthy and instead of wallowing in sadness over a broken heart, the other person can do that, thank you very much, cause I'm the one who is hard to get over!
