    Oh – this is a great question. Almost philosophical, really. I struggle with this one, especially as a solo act. Within a band or with co-writers – songs seem to get finished whether you’re ready or not. Could it be “done” (or done enough) once you’ve completed a rough demo, done your listening and critiquing, retooled and re-recorded enough… to where you are able to listen through without thinking (too much) like a songwriter?

    It’s to the point where you can stop and enjoy it (mmm these cookies are good – with your baking analogy) and not be thinking “what if I added more sugar?”

    Or maybe it’s just done once you start thinking more about the next song to work on (more of a – I guess that one is done now).
