L.A. Gypsy is a ragtag band of musicians who have turned to the melodic rock of their roots to shape the sound of their debut album.
Songwriters Mike Salvatore and Matt Nowicki met riding the train in high school and later were members of a rock band called the Sun City Diplomats. These days Mike lives in L.A., playing music along the Santa Monica coast, while Matt currently finds his inspiration in the backstreets of Brooklyn.
Not too long ago, Mike and Matt had a chance to play with saxophonist Todd Gaynor. When Mike first heard Todd’s solo material he asked him to collaborate on a new project. A year later, they began work on a collection of songs that would become L.A. Gypsy.
Todd introduced drummer Danny Wolf and bassist Ben Kogan. Danny & Ben met studying music at U. Miami and later co-founded the NY Rhythm Section, a collective of backing musicians based in Danny’s Brooklyn studio.
Last winter, the boys spent two weeks recording in a basement in Huntington, N.Y. The result is a sound that swirls classic Americana imagery and pop production through the electronic prism of a troubled modern time.
