That You May Know (I Loved You)

by Steven R Butler

Genre: Folk

Lyrics

this tale begins
i ‘m the fool without a clue
wishing i had said the things
that mean so much to you
for though i cared
my fumbled words came much too late
that you may know i loved you

now you’re gone
and emotions unexpressed
keep haunting me with memories,
regrets and my missteps
with each flower that i place
i seek a grace i sorely need
that you may know i loved you

if i could i’d bring you back and do things differently
i should have listened to that voice deep down inside of me
i would take back all my mistakes but time won’t let me now
and all the coulds, shoulds and woulds,
they don’t mean anything

foolish pride, kept affections deep inside
a mystery, as i used to be
all smiles and open arms
humility could not find me
lost was the chance at honesty
that you may know i loved you

if i could i’d bring you back and do things differently
i should have listened to that voice deep down inside of me
i would take back all my mistakes but time won’t let me now
and all the coulds, shoulds and woulds,
they don’t mean anything

this story ends
I will make it up to you
you’ll reach to me and we’ll embrace
in some other time and place
for that is my dream
while i lie awake late nights
that you may know i loved you
i loved you
i loved you
