Waiting for the Wheels (for the proposed ‘rails to trails’ project in western NC)
Listen for the whistle but it does not blow
train don’t run here any more
tracks are rusty and the cross ties old
broken glass and overgrown
waiting for the wheels to roll riding thru the country
waiting for the wheels to roll and they hardly make a sound
used to wake me from my sleep
still can hear that metal creak
box cars rattle as they roll along
shake the house and then be gone
waiting for the wheel to roll…
no more paper to unload
since Ecusta plant was closed
saw mill timber long since gone
now the tourists drive their own
waiting for the wheels to roll…
h’ville on to laurel park
horse shoe, etowah
penrose, pisgah forest
ending in brevard
18 miles of vacant rail
turned into a riding trail
for anyone to travel on
listen for the whistle but it does not blow
train don’t run here any more
lift the cross ties pull the spikes
we’ll soon be riding on our bikes
waiting for the wheels to roll …
